When I bought it, the cold start was very energetic with a high rev tone then gradually regulate to a normal pace and petrol engine shuts down.

But about 4 months I noticed the tone of the cold start has changed, it starts with a weak and low engine rev and delays to turn off the engine. Today it took about 10 mins to power off the engine. Got 2 months I changed my 12V battery Bosch nowthought that these symptoms was to notify that battery is failing.

But the problem is persistent despite I put new battery. I have an '06 trailblazer with the 5. When it's cold outside Freezing and below. The engine will start. Run for three seconds. And shutdown. Pass lock light stays solid. The engine won't crank for about a minute. And it'll do the same thing. If it's about 40 or above. No problems.

So I had 1st rough cold start today on Prius with 72K. Wasn't too cold low 40s. The fix was to shut it down and then turn on again. Engine sounded like it was working on 3 cylinders. It is probably ignition or perhaps valve train issue. If it happens again I'll pull and check plugs. I've had my Prius for about 3. It almost sounded like the wheel of fortune being spun but louder. I set my charging time with the buttons in the car dash to charge from midnight to 3am.

I plug in the car and the car will not charge until midnight. I drive it. Then the next night I go to plug in the car and it starts charging right away. Since the weather has dropped a little I was wondering if it's normal that the car sitting on in the drive way, on, would idle up a little just before shut down.

I mean shutdown to use the battery not shut down turn the car off. It idles fine for the warm up stage then just before it shuts down to be available for ev mode it spins up a little. I have a IV and after driving for an extended period and then shutting the car off I get a loud noise about a minute or a little more after shutdown. The best I can describe it is that it sounds like someone is dropping a 3 pound dead chicken from about 10 feet up onto my hood. Some things are often misunderstood about recalls and technical service bulletins TSBs.

See reliability data for the Toyota Prius. Recalls do not have to be issued only because something is prone to failure. NHTSA a government agency can only require a recall if a failure will affect safety, emissions, fuel economy, or compliance with some other regulation or law. Manufacturers can voluntarily recall cars for problems that do not affect these, though.

Recalls often apply to only some cars of a specific model year, rather than all of them. You should receive a letter from the manufacturer if your car has been recalled. You can also check with the dealer, which will know which if any recalls pertain to your car. The primary purpose of TSBs is to inform dealers about known problems with a car and how to fix them.

They are not the same as recalls. As with recalls, TSBs often only apply to some cars, not the entire model year. Dealers often will not provide a preventive repair just because a problem described in a TSB might happen to your car. They'll usually want to observe symptoms that the problem is already affecting your car. Even if there are symptoms, a manufacturer doesn't have to pick up the cost of a TSB repair if the car is out of warranty, though sometimes they do.

The procedure for inspection is straightforward — remove the oil control valve and test it for operation outside the engine manually by applying 12 volts to the terminals of the oil control valve.

A visual inspection of the valve is also important. The valve from this Camry functioned when manually tested the concern can be intermittentbut a visual inspection reveal debris stuck in the bore of the oil control valve proper.

Debris always requires further investigation. The guest allowed the technician to some additional time to inspect the oil feed to the oil control valve, hoping to find the cause of the debris. The oil feed to the oil control valve and VVT system flows through the valve cover, which had no debris:. The cam cap was also removed to inspect the oil feed from the cylinder head, for which there is an oil screen prior to the VVT system, under the circled cap in the below photo when the cap is removed:.

No debris was found anywhere else but in the oil control valve. The timing of the engine was also checked with the valve cover off and was OK and a coincidental damaged tab on a chain guide was also found and repaired.

Per the only inspected related failure being in the oil control valve, it was recommended that the oil control valve be replaced as the first repair attempt. The rattle noise did not change.

When recommending a repair on a complex system, it is always important to discuss with the guest the logic behind the recommended repair and any future repairs or additional diagnostics that may be required. In this particular case, the guest was made aware of the debris in the oil control valve, the unknown source of the debris, and the potential for other VVT issues related to other components particular to the VVT camshaft gear.

With the code persisting, the next step was to address the workhorse of the system as the potential cause of the failure — the VVT camshaft gear. The oil control valve allows oil into and out of the VVT camshaft gear to advance or retard the intake camshaft timing. An internal failure was the next likeliest malfunction, doubly so due to the cold start rattle that often accompanies VVT camshaft gear issues.

Unfortunately, the VVT camshaft gear is not a serviceable part — it cannot be disassembled and reassembled reliably nor inspected. With this being the case, the guest and technician agreed to remove and replace the VVT camshaft gear as the next logical repair attempt. The failure was obvious when the part was disassembled, with one entire lobe of the internal camshaft phaser was broken off and wedged into the gear:.

The new camshaft gear was installed, the system reassembled and the car returned to service, now with no more check engine light or VVT codes. Howdy CARSpec crew! For sale is our Prius, 71k miles, in white on tan. The vehicle was purchased new in … instagram. Call Us Today!By grahamhJanuary 18, in Prius Club. I have model Prius in garage fitted new inlet manifold to cure rough running and knock from cold start. Whenever the ICE starts you must let it run through the first warm up stage, that is, with the heater off, let the engine run until it stops by itself.

It's less than a minute IIRC. If you don't do this you may leave excess fuel in the manifold which could cause the knocking when you start up next time as it's overfuelling. The new manifold sorted mine. I experienced the knock a few times, then it was upgraded and never happened since. I do believe there's a software patch to stop it too. I trust you have a full Toyota service history where they can apply these patches? If you don't do this you may leave excess fuel in the manifold.

Without going into the technicalities it is due to the car being shut down during the first couple stages of the warm up cycle in cold damp weather, often when it has been sat for a few days. As a cheap 'fix' it is easier to use EV if you're just going to move the car 20 feet off your drive etc.

Not ideal, but that's how it is :. NEVER had a problem in all my other cars i have owned over the 45 years of driving that includes numerous Toyota from Ev was selected but Battery was low so ice started up. There were loads of reports of this cold start misfire back in but after the fix there are barely any.

I wonder if your software is not fully upto date? For noises occurring at temperatures below degrees C which involves fitting modified injectors and updating the software the fix dates for production varies by model:. As the weather has been very cold recently you may be experiencing issue 2 as well as issue 1 if an earlier manifold type was fitted. Still possible to get a few cold nights in Feb, so plenty of opportunity to find out.

Glad it's all sorted. It Seems if you thought it was fixed earlier it was not ,you would have thought Toyota would have contacted owners of the Prius cars that had the 1st modified manifold fitted ,to advise them that a later version was available.

Ok if you let it warm up before you switch it off after a cold start it may not happen ,Prius was engineered for economy ,not to waste fuel warming up a cold engine. Only thing bothers me is the damage explosions do in the exhaust ,a Catalytic converter may be damaged and looking at it, it does not look cheap!

Isn't it also partly software? I believe there are a number of different versions out there and varieties thereof. This became apparent on the US Priuschat forum when the inverter recalls were in full swing.

Some owners experienced severe retardation of acceleration following the recall and others didn't. Upon investigation it turns out there were different software versions in use, some allowing harsher use of the inverter. Once updated to the latest versions throughout, owners have had happy cars that start fine on cold damp mornings. Well, so long as they got the updated manifold aswell.

Our dealer changed the manifold on our previous Prius which cured the problem. My prius runs smoothly when it's cold and most of the time when it's warm. There are times when I pull over and go into a store and it's will run really rough for about 5 minutes of driving. The engine light comes on and gives a random misfire code.

I took it into a mechanic and they found fuel in the number 1 and 4 cylinders. I had the injectors cleaned and inspected and the first time that I ran it and then stopped for 10 minutes it started misfiring again. The odd thing is that I can disconnect the spark plug wire on any cylinder and it will run fairly smooth.

I'm confused! Do you. P Random misfires normally caused by vacuum leak and bad fuel fuel- Was this answer. Would that cause it to misfire when it's warm but not when it's cold? Was this answer. Did you ever find a cause? I had mine in the shop for 3 days and they replaces the o-rings on the fuel injectors because they appeared to be leaking some fuel, but it did not solve the issue.

I have cleaned the mass air flow sensor and throdle body.

I replaced the plugs last year. I assume this is unrelated but thought I would share as much data as possible since this is a tough one to solve. Thanks Was this answer. As the spark plugs heat up, their resistance increases. That could cause it.

It could also be a vacuum leak that doesn't happen until the leaking part heats up and expands. Please login or register to post a reply. Related Engine Runs Rough Content. It Runs Rough When your car's check engine comes on the first thing you think of is my car still safe to drive?

It can take ten minutes or more to get the car started. This happens when the car is cold, or has been sitting for a while, or randomly at other times. The Toyota service department will only address the problem if they can replicate it. They reset a computer component which helped for three months.

Any solutions that you know of? You might post this on a Prius forum, like Priuschat. There will be a large number of Prius owners that can help, and maybe this question has already been asked. Have they checked your 12V battery? Observe the start button as you press the brake when starting. The light should change from orange to green. If the light in the start switch is flashing this indicates there is too much tension on the steering system to release the steering lock.

This can occur when one front tire pressed against a curb or parking stop. If this is the case turn the steering wheel side to side to remove tension from the steering lock. From my experience with batteries, I start looking for battery trouble at the four year mark.

So, rather than spending a lot of time trying to diagnose the problem, I replaced the battery and then waited to see if the lack of the READY light problem continued. It did not. My second comment relates to the prices of the special type of battery needed for the Prius.

Rough running Prius

However, I came across an Exide battery that is a direct fit. I installed it in 10 minutes…easiest battery installation I have experienced. One reminder: When installing the battery I hooked up my portable jump starter device to the jump starting connections under the hood. This saved all of the radio presets, etc.

Thanks everyone! I took it in this week and left it overnight.
